Why we started

A child with autism in a corner. A teacher who didn't recognise dyslexia. A community that wanted to help — but didn't know how.

In Uganda, autism is still often confused with stubbornness; dyslexia and ADHD with laziness. Many parents carry the weight of a child whose mind works differently — alone. Many teachers meet behaviour they were never trained to understand. Many children grow up believing the difference they carry is a curse rather than a way of being.

Great Destinies Foundation began when two Ugandans — Nagawa Ruth and Luutu Daniel — kept meeting the same silence. In schools, in homes, in churches. They decided the silence had to break, gently and persistently, until every child in our reach knew: you are seen, you are loved, you have a destiny. They were soon joined by Nassali Prossy, a qualified Nutritionist who now stewards our finances, and Nampeera Rebecca, who leads our counselling work — completing a four-person Ugandan executive.

What started as a few visits to one school in Buloba has grown into a registered community-based organisation (CBO/25/1549) now preparing to register as a fully-fledged National NGO — extending its reach across Wakiso District and beyond.

What guides us

Vision. Mission. Values.

Three quiet commitments we return to every day.

Vision

A Uganda where every child — regardless of mind, ability, or background — grows up understood, valued, and equipped to fulfil their God-given destiny.

Mission

To support children with autism and learning disabilities in Uganda, to raise mental health awareness among the youth, and to empower the caregivers who carry this work — through schools, families, and communities, until no child is left in the shadows.

Values

Dignity — every person is worthy. Compassion — love that acts. Faith — quiet hope in long work. Integrity — accountable, transparent, and honest. Community — no one walks alone.

Our journey

From a small idea to a registered foundation.

A community-based beginning growing toward full NGO status.

  1. 2023

    The Foundation begins

Great Destinies Foundation is established in Buloba, Wakiso District, by Nagawa Ruth and Luutu Daniel — registered as a community-based organisation (CBO) with a clear focus on youth mental health and inclusion of children with mental disabilities.

  2. 2024

    School outreach launches

First in-school sensitisation programs begin. The Foundation works with primary and secondary schools in Wakiso to introduce mental health language pupils and teachers can use without shame.

  3. 2025

    Caregiver circles & livelihood pilots

The Foundation begins supporting caregivers of children with disabilities — through emotional support gatherings and small livelihood initiatives, including the craft programme producing handmade bags.

  4. 2026

    Transitioning to NGO

With growing reach and accountability structures in place, Great Destinies Foundation is moving from CBO to full NGO registration — opening the door for institutional partnerships, multi-district programs, and international collaboration.

Governance & accountability

How we are structured.

A clear governance framework — because trust must be earned and protected.

General Assembly

All founding members and accepted full members. Highest decision-making body; meets at least annually to review direction, approve audited accounts, and elect the Board.

Board of Directors

5–9 members elected from the General Assembly. Provides strategic oversight, approves the annual budget, safeguarding policy, and partnerships.

Executive Committee

Chairperson, Secretary, and Treasurer — responsible for day-to-day leadership, supervision of programs, and reporting back to the Board and General Assembly.

Programs & Field Team

Field officers, volunteers, and trained community focal persons who deliver mental health sessions, school outreaches, and caregiver support directly on the ground.
